When a visual PDF/A copy is useful

Choose a raster archive with an informed understanding of text, signatures and preservation.

Preserve the visible page

A visual archive records page appearance as pixels. This avoids dependence on external fonts, scripts and live forms because those objects are not carried into the new PDF. The output is useful when the stable appearance of a finished page is the intended preservation target.

That choice also removes useful structure. You cannot select text, follow original links or verify an original digital signature in the raster copy. Keep the source PDF alongside the archive when those properties matter.

Choose the resolution deliberately

150 DPI is a practical starting point for ordinary documents. Fine print or line art may need 200 DPI. Examine small labels, thin lines and the first and final pages before accepting a result.

The pixel budget is calculated across all pages. Large engineering sheets can consume the budget quickly even when the input file is small. Reduce the resolution or split the source if the tool reports a limit.

A practical conversion sequence

Select a complete PDF, choose a resolution and read the image-only acknowledgement before starting. The built-in example creates a real two-page PDF and processes it through the same renderer. When your archive is ready, compare the page-conversion table with the original page count and dimensions, then download the archival PDF itself. Printing the report is a separate action and does not save the converted document.

At 150 DPI, an A4 portrait page is approximately 1,241 by 1,754 pixels, or 2.18 million pixels. Around 27 such pages approach the 60-million-pixel document budget. This explains why a document below the 100-page cap can still exceed the memory limit. Moving to 100 DPI reduces the pixel count; splitting the source into smaller PDFs is another option.

Decide when to keep another format

Use the original document for accessible reading, searching, copying text and verifying a cryptographic signature. Keep a vector version for drawings whose fine lines must remain sharp at large enlargement. A visual archive is useful for a stable page appearance, but it is a deliberate derivative. Do not discard a richer original merely because a new file has an archival identifier.
